What a Replacement Cannot Assume
The tempting shortcut on a replacement is to treat it as swapping a box. Equipment has changed enough that this rarely holds. Airflow expectations are higher, so a duct system that was adequate for a fifteen-year-old unit may not be adequate now. Refrigerant has moved from R-410A to R-454B on new equipment, which affects line set reuse, accessories and leak-detection requirements. Cabinet footprints and clearance requirements have changed as well, and a new unit occasionally does not fit where the old one sat.
What a First Installation Cannot Assume
The mirror-image error is designing ducts for the load and discovering that the building has nowhere to put them. Chases compete with plumbing stacks, joist bays run the wrong direction, and finished ceilings are expensive to open. Routing is confirmed physically during the assessment, and the result sometimes changes the whole approach from ducted to ductless for part of the house.

Where Each One Is Handled
New cooling in a house that has ducts, and cooling design for a house that does not, both sit with central AC installation. Replacement of an existing central system that has reached the end of its service life is its own project with its own decisions about what carries over. Where the existing unit has a specific fault and the rest of the machine is sound, the question is answered first by a central AC repair assessment, and a project that also replaces the heating equipment moves to whole-system HVAC installation.
