The difference is how much of the system changes in one visit. An AC installation puts in a condenser, an evaporator coil and a line set, leaving the existing furnace or air handler in place to move the air. A whole-system HVAC installation replaces the heating equipment at the same time, which turns one sizing exercise into two and changes what the ductwork has to support.

When the Cooling-Only Path Makes Sense
Where the furnace is recent, sized correctly and has a blower capable of the airflow a new coil needs, replacing only the cooling half is the honest answer. A variable-speed or ECM blower installed within the last several years is usually equal to the task. The line set and the electrical service also need to suit the new equipment, and both are checked at the site assessment rather than assumed.
When Splitting the Project Costs You Twice
A furnace at the end of its service life changes the arithmetic. Modern cooling equipment expects specific airflow across the coil, and an older single-speed blower often cannot deliver it, which caps the capacity that actually reaches the rooms. Replacing the furnace two years later then means opening the same cabinet, disturbing the new coil and paying a second time for the labour of getting to it. Where the heating equipment is already near retirement, doing both at once is usually the cleaner project.
Signals That Point Toward the Whole System
- Heating equipment is past twenty years old, or its heat exchanger has already been flagged.
- The blower is a single-speed PSC motor and the new cooling equipment is rated for higher airflow than it can produce.
- Static pressure measured at the existing air handler is already above what the equipment is designed to work against, which means the duct system will limit either half.
- Comfort complaints have appeared in both seasons, so one sizing pass covering heating and cooling does more than two separate ones.
What Does Not Change Between Them
Both paths need a load calculation done for this house, a matched indoor and outdoor pair with an AHRI reference, a permit where the municipality requires one, and commissioning that records the numbers the system produced on the day it was started. Neither path is a straight swap of what was there before, because equipment ratings, refrigerants and duct expectations have all moved since most existing systems were installed.
Choosing the Entry Point
If the heating equipment is staying, the project belongs with central AC installation, and the assessment concentrates on the coil, the line set and what the existing blower can do. If both halves are being replaced, or the sizing has to cover winter as well, the starting point is whole-system HVAC installation and replacement. Where the existing system is only failing rather than aging out, a repair assessment comes first and settles whether an installation is the right conversation at all.
