A service visit on a residential central system has four parts: intake, measurement, correction, verification. Most of the technician time goes into the second and fourth. The parts a homeowner tends to notice, gauges on the service ports and a panel off the air handler, sit in the middle of a sequence that started with questions at the door.
Intake Before Any Panel Comes Off
The first minutes are spent on history. When did the symptom start, does it happen at a particular time of day, has anything changed in the house, when was the filter last replaced, has anyone worked on the system recently. A system that has been running on a plugged filter for six weeks tells a different story than one that failed overnight. Thermostat settings and the breaker position get checked here as well, because a surprising share of no-cooling calls end at a tripped breaker or a fan switch left on.
The Measurements That Come Next
Diagnosis on cooling equipment is arithmetic before it is anything else. The numbers a technician records on a normal visit fall into five groups, and each group rules a family of faults in or out:
- Supply and return air temperatures, giving the temperature split across the evaporator coil.
- Static pressure on both sides of the air handler, which shows whether the duct system and filter are letting the blower move the air the coil needs.
- Suction and liquid pressures, converted to saturation temperatures and combined with line temperatures to give superheat and subcool.
- Amp draw on the compressor, the condenser fan and the indoor blower, compared against the nameplate values on the equipment.
- Capacitance on each run capacitor, compared against the rating printed on the can.
Those five sets of readings separate the common failure families from each other. Low split with normal pressures points at airflow. High superheat with low subcool points at charge or a restriction. Normal refrigerant numbers with high amp draw points at the electrical side or at a mechanical load the compressor should not be seeing.
Correction, and What Gets Decided First
Straightforward corrections happen on the visit: a cleared condensate drain, a replaced capacitor, a cleaned outdoor coil, a new contactor, a filter that should have been changed two months ago. Work that needs a part not on the van, or that changes the cost of the visit materially, gets described and quoted before it starts. Refrigerant is a specific case. A system low on charge has a leak somewhere, and adding refrigerant without finding it means the same call again next season, so leak search comes first and the homeowner is told what the search involves.
Verification and the Written Record
After the correction, the same measurements are repeated under the same conditions. A repair that has not been verified against a second set of readings is a guess with a receipt attached. The paperwork that leaves with the homeowner should name the fault, the part or condition corrected, and the before-and-after numbers that support it.
What Is Not Part of This Visit
- Duct replacement, duct sealing beyond a small accessible repair, and structural work on the plenum.
- Electrical work upstream of the disconnect, which belongs to a licensed electrician.
- Equipment selection and load calculation for a new system, which is central AC installation work with its own site assessment.
- Heating-side faults on the shared furnace or air handler, unless the same component drives both seasons, in which case the visit widens into whole-system HVAC repair.
