Equipment rarely fails without warning. The signals arrive as changes in sound, run time, moisture, smell or electrical behaviour, and each family points at a different part of the system. What follows is what each change usually means and how urgent it is.
Run Time That Has Changed Shape
A healthy central system on a hot afternoon runs long cycles and holds setpoint. Two departures from that are worth attention. Cycles that have become very short, a couple of minutes on and off again, suggest a control fault, a charge problem or an airflow restriction severe enough to trip a safety. Cycles that never end, with the system running continuously and still losing ground in the afternoon, point at lost capacity: a fouled coil, a low charge, or a system that is being asked for more than it was sized to deliver.
Sounds That Were Not There Last Season
- A hum at the outdoor unit with the fan not turning usually means a failed capacitor or a seized fan motor, and running the system in that state loads the compressor.
- Grinding or squealing from the air handler points at blower bearings.
- A hard metallic clatter at startup that settles after a few seconds suggests compressor mounts or internal wear.
- Hissing near the indoor coil or the line set can indicate a refrigerant leak large enough to hear, which is unusual and worth an immediate call.
- Rapid clicking at the outdoor unit with no start is a contactor chattering, and the control circuit is the place to look.
Water Where It Does Not Belong
The evaporator coil produces condensate all summer, and the drain carries it away. Water around the air handler means the drain is blocked, the pan has rusted through, or the coil has frozen and is now thawing. All three need attention quickly, because the water finds ceilings and subfloors before it finds anyone. A coil that freezes has a root cause upstream, in airflow or in charge, and thawing it without correcting that cause returns the same result within days.
Electrical Behaviour
A breaker that trips on the air conditioner circuit is reporting current that the circuit should not be carrying. Resetting it once is reasonable. Resetting it a second time is not, because the fault that caused the trip is still there and the next attempt puts starting current through it again. Lights that dim noticeably every time the outdoor unit starts, on a system where that did not happen before, indicate a hard-starting compressor and belong on the same call.
Smell
Musty air on startup usually comes from biological growth on a wet evaporator coil or in the drain pan, and it clears with cleaning. A sharp chemical or sweet smell near the indoor unit can accompany a refrigerant leak. Any burning or hot-plastic smell means the system is turned off at the thermostat and at the breaker, and the call is made from there.
What to Record Before Calling
- The date the change was first noticed, and whether it is constant or tied to a time of day.
- Thermostat setpoint against the actual indoor temperature at the moment you noticed it.
- Whether the outdoor fan is turning when the system is calling for cooling.
- Filter condition and the date it was last replaced, which explains a surprising number of airflow complaints.
- Any breaker that has tripped, and how many times.
