An emergency is a failure where waiting costs something that cannot be recovered: health risk to someone in the house, water spreading into building materials, or an electrical fault that will damage the equipment on the next start attempt. Loss of cooling on a mild day is uncomfortable and belongs on the normal schedule.
What Puts a Call in the Urgent Column
- Indoor temperature climbing during a heat advisory with an infant, an elderly resident or someone with a cardiac or respiratory condition in the house.
- Water actively running from the air handler into finished ceilings, walls or flooring.
- Burning smell, visible scorching at the disconnect or the contactor, or smoke of any kind.
- A breaker on the air conditioner circuit that trips again immediately after being reset once.
- A refrigerant leak large enough to hear, particularly where the line set runs through occupied space.
The First Ten Minutes
Turn the system off at the thermostat, then at the breaker if the fault is electrical or if anything smells hot. That single step prevents most of the secondary damage that turns a component failure into equipment replacement. If water is involved, shut the system down and put a container under the drip while the ceiling below is checked. For heat risk, move people to the coolest part of the house, usually the lowest floor and the north side, run fans, and open windows only if the outside air is genuinely cooler than the indoor air, which after dark it often is.
Why the Second Breaker Reset Matters
A breaker trip is a measurement. Something drew more current than the circuit permits, and the most common reasons are a shorted compressor winding, a locked rotor, a failed capacitor leaving a motor stalled, or damaged wiring at the disconnect. Resetting once to confirm is standard. Resetting repeatedly pushes locked-rotor current through the same fault, and a compressor that could have been saved by a start component becomes a compressor that has to be replaced. A start component is a small part on a shelf, and a compressor is the piece of equipment that the rest of the system is built around.
What an After-Hours Visit Covers
The purpose of an emergency visit is to make the system safe and restore cooling where that can be done with parts on the van: capacitors, contactors, fan motors, control transformers, condensate pumps, drain clearing. Work that needs a special-order component, a sealed-system repair with recovery equipment, or a permitted change is stabilised and scheduled.
