The decision is usually presented as a question about age. Age matters, and on its own it decides very little. What decides it is the combination of which part failed, what condition the rest of the machine is in, and whether the refrigerant in the circuit can still be supported.
Failures That Point Toward Replacement
- Compressor failure past the expected service life, particularly a burnout.
- A leaking evaporator or condenser coil where the replacement part is a large share of the machine.
- Refrigerant loss from a leak that cannot be located after a documented search, on a system holding R-22.
- Two or three separate failures across consecutive seasons that trace back to one underlying condition.
Failures That Point Toward Repair
- Capacitors, contactors, condenser fan motors and control boards, all of which are ordinary wear items with clear service lives.
- A single accessible refrigerant leak at a joint or a valve, on a system otherwise holding its charge.
- Blower motors and drain components, which are serviceable independently of the refrigerant circuit.
- Thermostat and low-voltage control faults, which sit entirely outside the equipment.
What Age Actually Tells You
Expected service life on residential cooling equipment in this climate runs somewhere between twelve and twenty years, and the spread is wide because it depends on run hours, maintenance history and installation quality. A twelve-year-old system that was commissioned properly and serviced annually is a different proposition from an eight-year-old unit that was overcharged at startup and never touched since. Age is a prior, and the measurements taken during diagnosis are the evidence that updates it.
The Refrigerant Question
Systems charged with R-22 face a supply constraint that has nothing to do with mechanical condition. A leak repair on such a system may be technically straightforward and still leave the owner exposed the next time the circuit loses charge. That consideration belongs in the conversation explicitly rather than as an implied argument for new equipment.

Where Each Path Continues
If the evidence supports repairing, the work is scoped through central AC repair and maintenance, and the readings taken become the baseline for the next visit. If it supports replacement, the project moves to a full assessment with a fresh load calculation, since equipment selection starts from the house rather than from the outgoing nameplate. Where the furnace is also near its limit, the two decisions are better taken together as a whole-system project.
