Both projects finish with a working central system, and they start from opposite conditions. Replacement begins with infrastructure already in the building and asks whether it still fits equipment built to current standards. First installation begins with an empty envelope and asks whether the routes physically exist.
Two Different Kinds of Unknown
On a replacement the unknowns are compatibility questions. Will the existing line set carry the new refrigerant. Can the duct system pass the airflow the new coil expects. Does the new cabinet fit the pad and its clearances. Each has a measurable answer, and the assessment produces it in an afternoon.
On a first installation the unknowns are physical. Whether a trunk can reach the second floor without losing a closet, whether the joists run the way the plan needs them to, whether the panel has space for a new circuit. Those answers sometimes change the whole approach, moving part of the house from ducted equipment to ductless heads.

Sequencing Differs More Than People Expect
A replacement can be planned while the old system still runs, which allows the work to happen outside the peak weeks and lets equipment be chosen on merit. A first installation has no such clock, though it usually involves more trades and more days in the house. The one case that removes all flexibility is a replacement forced by a mid-summer failure, where the assessment still happens but the options for timing have gone.

Which One Applies
A house with a working duct system and no cooling equipment is a first installation, handled through central AC installation. A house with a central system at the end of its life is a replacement, with the inheritance questions above.
