A first ductless installation designs everything. A replacement inherits line sets, penetrations, mounting plates and drains, and the useful question is which of those can carry forward to equipment that may use a different refrigerant and a different communication protocol.

Line Sets Are the Main Inheritance

Existing copper is the most valuable thing to reuse, because replacing it means opening covers, refishing walls or re-coring penetrations. Reuse depends on diameter matching the new equipment, insulation being intact or replaceable, and the tubing being clean. Residue from a failed compressor rules it out. Where the new system uses R-454B and the old one used R-410A, compatibility of the tubing and any accessories is checked rather than assumed.

Indoor and outdoor units communicate over a proprietary protocol, and mixing a new outdoor cabinet with older heads from the same manufacturer generally does not work, let alone across brands. A replacement therefore usually replaces both ends. The exception is adding a head to an existing multi-zone system, where the new indoor unit has to be a model the installed outdoor unit supports and the outdoor capacity has to have room for it.

  • Total connected capacity across all heads has limits set by the manufacturer, and exceeding them degrades every zone.
  • A branch box or distribution joint may be required depending on how the system was originally piped.
  • Total line set length across the system has a maximum, which a long new run can exceed.

Sizing Is Revisited on a Replacement

A room that never held temperature under the old system will not hold it under new equipment of the same capacity. Replacement is the moment to correct an original sizing or placement error, and the assessment asks about performance history for exactly that reason. Rooms that were always fine can keep the same nominal capacity.

Where Each Project Runs

New ductless work and replacement of existing ductless equipment both sit with ductless mini-split installation, since they share the same design questions. A system that has stopped performing but is otherwise sound should be diagnosed first through ductless repair and maintenance, because a fault is not a reason to replace a machine. Where the house also has ducted equipment reaching end of life, central AC installation covers that half.

Older Heads Come Off Mounting Plates Differently

Bracket patterns changed between equipment generations, so a replacement head rarely lands on the existing plate. Allowing for a new plate and its fixings keeps a straightforward swap straightforward.

Refrigerant Recovery on Small Systems

Ductless circuits hold modest charges and still require recovery into approved cylinders before anything is opened. The quantity is documented in the same way as on a central system.

Testing an Old Line Set Before Trusting It

Pressure holding over a measured period, with the reading recorded, is what separates reusable copper from a leak waiting for July. That test happens before the new equipment is connected.

Which head serves which room, the branch each one uses, the total line length and the charge added. On a multi-zone replacement that map is what makes the next fault diagnosable.
