Ductless projects are assessed room by room. Each conditioned space gets its own load figure, its own head selection and its own placement decision, and only then does the outdoor unit get sized against the total.
Stage One: Load Per Room, Not Per House
Manual J still applies, calculated for each room that will have a head. A bedroom under an uninsulated roof and a north-facing living room of the same floor area have quite different loads. Sizing every head to the same nominal capacity because it simplifies ordering produces rooms that are over-served and rooms that never keep up. Oversized heads on inverter equipment also spend their time at minimum output, which reduces the dehumidification the room actually needs.
Stage Two: Head Placement
- High on an interior wall where discharge air can reach across the room without an immediate obstruction.
- Clear of curtains, shelving and furniture that would deflect airflow back into the unit.
- Within reach of a drain route that falls continuously toward its discharge point.
- Somewhere the line set can leave the building without crossing a window or a structural member.
- Away from beds and desks, since discharge air blowing onto a person is the most common complaint raised after a ductless installation is finished.
Stage Three: Line Set and Penetration
Each head connects to the outdoor unit through a refrigerant pair, a condensate hose and a control cable, usually bundled inside a sleeve. The wall penetration is cored with a slight downward slope to the outside so that water cannot track back in. Sealing that penetration properly matters more than it looks: an unsealed sleeve is a permanent air leak in a Chicago winter, and it is invisible once the cover is fitted. Exterior line covers protect the insulation from sunlight, which otherwise hardens and splits it within a few seasons.
Stage Four: Electrical and Outdoor Mounting
The outdoor unit needs a dedicated circuit and a disconnect within sight. Mounting height matters in this climate, because a cabinet set at grade sits in accumulated snow and drains meltwater into it, which refreezes and builds upward. Wall brackets or raised stands keep the coil clear. Clearances around the cabinet are manufacturer figures and apply exactly as written on a narrow lot.
Stage Five: Evacuation, Charge and Commissioning
Flare connections are made to the manufacturer torque specification, because an over-tightened flare cracks and an under-tightened one leaks. The circuit is then evacuated to a micron target and held to prove it is dry and tight. Charge follows the factory value plus the line-length correction where the run exceeds the amount pre-charged into the outdoor unit. Commissioning records the supply and return temperatures at each head, current draw at the outdoor unit and the operating data the system reports, and those numbers go on the paperwork.
Work That Is Quoted Separately
Electrical service upgrades ahead of the panel, structural alterations, and drywall or plaster repair beyond the penetration itself are separate items quoted after the assessment. Service on the finished system belongs with ductless repair and maintenance. A project that also involves ducted equipment elsewhere in the house runs alongside central AC installation, and everything ductless stays with mini-split installation.
