Two answers shape a ductless project: how many rooms genuinely need conditioning, and whether one outdoor unit should serve all of them. Everything else follows. Electrical work, line set routing, the choice of head type in each room and where the outdoor equipment finally sits are all downstream of those two decisions, which is why they are settled before any equipment is priced.
Counting Zones Honestly
A zone is a room that needs its own conditioning. Open-plan space counts as one zone even when it spans two nominal rooms, while small rooms behind closed doors each need a head of their own, because a ductless unit does very little for a space it cannot blow into. Walk the house room by room and mark which spaces are actually occupied and when. That list is usually shorter than the first estimate.

Where the Outdoor Unit Can Go
Ground mounting on a raised stand is the usual arrangement, kept clear of snow accumulation and drip lines from the roof. Wall brackets suit narrow gangways and keep the cabinet above winter accumulation entirely. Neither should sit under a window that opens, and clearances published by the manufacturer are performance requirements. On a city lot the outdoor location often becomes the constraint that decides how many zones a single system can practically serve.
Head Types and What They Suit
- Wall-mounted units are the default: least expensive to fit, widest availability, visible in the room.
- Ceiling cassettes recess into a suspended or accessible ceiling and distribute air in several directions, which suits square rooms.
- Floor-standing consoles sit low on the wall and work where sloped attic ceilings leave no height for a wall unit.
- Short-duct or concealed units feed two or three nearby small rooms through a very short duct run, which reduces the number of visible heads.
Electrical Capacity
Each outdoor unit needs a dedicated circuit and a disconnect, and a multi-zone cabinet draws more than a single-zone one. Older Chicago panels frequently lack the free breaker positions, and occasionally the service capacity, that a multi-head installation requires. Checking the panel before the design is settled prevents a project from stalling between the equipment arriving and an electrician being available.
When a Different Approach Fits
A house with sound ductwork and one uncomfortable floor does not need ductless equipment; it needs zone control on what already exists. A house with ducts and no cooling at all is a central AC installation. Ductless makes sense where the distribution does not exist or cannot reach, and that work runs through ductless installation. Existing ductless equipment that has stopped performing is a service question rather than a design one.
