Three things set urgency on ductless equipment: water going somewhere it should not, electrical faults, and whether the failed head is the only source of conditioning for an occupied room. That last one matters more than it first appears. A single-head installation serving a converted attic loses the room entirely when it stops, while one head among five in a house that also runs central equipment leaves the rest of the building comfortable and the call can wait for morning.
Failures That Need an Immediate Response
- Water running from the indoor head into the wall or down onto flooring, which damages building materials within hours.
- Any burning smell, scorch mark or visible discoloration at the indoor unit or at the outdoor disconnect.
- A breaker on the ductless circuit that trips again after a single reset.
- A refrigerant leak audible as hissing from the indoor head, particularly in a bedroom or a small closed room.
- Loss of heating in a deep winter cold snap where the ductless head is the only heat source for that space, since pipes and occupants are both at risk.
The First Steps
Switch the head off at the remote, then open the breaker if the fault is electrical or if anything smells hot. For a water leak, shut the system down first, because the head stops producing condensate as soon as the coil stops running, and place a container under the drip while the wall below is checked. Where a refrigerant leak is suspected in a small room, ventilate the space and keep it unoccupied until a technician has looked at it. Why Ductless Water Leaks Move Faster Than Ducted Ones
A central system drains from a pan in a mechanical space, usually with a secondary pan and a float switch beneath it. A wall-mounted head drains through a hose inside the line set sleeve, and the sleeve passes through the wall cavity. When that hose blocks, water leaves the pan at the head and follows the sleeve into the wall, where it reaches insulation and framing before anyone sees a stain. That is why a drip from a ductless head is treated more urgently than the same volume of water in a basement.
What Can Be Done on an After-Hours Visit
The purpose of an urgent visit is to stop damage and restore operation where van stock allows. Drain clearing, pump replacement, capacitors, fan motors, contactors and control components are commonly carried. Manufacturer-specific boards, compressors and inverter modules are usually ordered against the model, so those visits stabilise the system and secure the room.
