A ductless head that runs without cooling narrows quickly, because the machine reports much of what is wrong with it. Reading the fault code, then feeling the air and checking the outdoor unit, separates most cases before any tool comes out.
Airflow the Head Cannot Produce
Weak air from the louvres with the fan clearly running is the most common presentation. Pre-filters loaded with dust cut flow first. Behind them a coil face matted with fine material and a blower wheel carrying a film in every vane do the same thing more permanently. The room warms slowly, the head runs longer to compensate, and eventually the coil temperature falls far enough that the unit ices or trips its own protection.
Sensor and Control Faults
Ductless systems rely on thermistors: room air, coil, discharge line, outdoor ambient. A thermistor that has drifted out of calibration reports a temperature that never existed, and the control board responds sensibly to bad information. The result can be a head that runs its fan but never calls the compressor, or one that cycles the compressor off after a minute. These show as sensor-family codes, and the measurement is resistance against the manufacturer table at a known temperature.
Refrigerant That Has Escaped
Flare connections at the indoor head and at the service valves are the usual leak points on ductless equipment, and vibration or an imperfect flare at installation is often behind it. A system short on charge cools weakly on mild days and gives up entirely on hot ones. Frost on the smaller line at the outdoor valves is a common visible sign. Charge is corrected only after the leak is found, and on flare joints that frequently means remaking the connection rather than adding refrigerant.

Multi-Zone Behaviour Worth Noting
One head warm while the others cool normally points at that branch: its expansion valve, its sensor set or its section of communication wiring. Every head weak at once points at the outdoor unit or the shared charge. Which of the two is happening is the single most useful thing a homeowner can observe before the visit, and it is worth checking each room deliberately.
What to Do Before the Call
- Rinse and dry the pre-filters, then run the system again and note whether anything changed.
- Write down the fault code shown on the head or reported by the remote.
- Confirm the mode is cooling and the setpoint is genuinely below room temperature, since a head left in fan or dry mode moves air without cooling it.
- Look at the outdoor unit and note whether the fan turns, whether the coil is clear and whether frost is visible on the copper at the valves.
- Check the other heads in the house one at a time and record which of them still cool.
Those observations shorten a ductless repair visit considerably. Central ducted equipment in the same house fails differently and is covered by central AC repair, while a head that has never cooled its room adequately since installation is a sizing or placement question for ductless installation.
