Ductless equipment reports on itself. Before any panel comes off, the technician retrieves stored fault codes from the indoor head or the outdoor board, because inverter systems log the condition that stopped them and that log points at a circuit rather than a symptom.
Codes First, Panels Second
Each manufacturer uses its own code set, and the same two-digit display can mean different things on different platforms. Retrieval is done through the remote, a service button on the indoor unit, or LED flash patterns on the outdoor board. The code narrows the search to a family: sensor circuit, communication between indoor and outdoor units, inverter or compressor protection, or refrigerant-side pressure. Measurement then begins inside that family, which is why the code is read before any cover is removed.
The Indoor Head Is Most of the Work
On a ducted system the coil sits in a cabinet and the filter catches most of what would foul it. A ductless head has a shallow washable pre-filter and a fine coil directly behind it, with a barrel-shaped blower wheel a few centimetres away. Household dust, cooking aerosols and biological growth accumulate on both. A service visit therefore spends most of its time on the head itself, and the work covers five things:
- Rinsing the pre-filters, the one task left to the homeowner between visits.
- Cleaning the evaporator fins with the correct coil agent and protecting the electronics while it runs off.
- Cleaning the blower wheel, where deposits build up in each vane and quietly cut delivered airflow long before anyone in the room notices a difference.
- Flushing the drain pan and the condensate line, then confirming it actually flows to its discharge point.
- Checking the drain pump where one is fitted, including the float and the check valve.
What Gets Measured on Inverter Equipment
Fixed-speed diagnostics do not transfer directly. An inverter compressor changes speed continuously, so a single pressure reading taken at an unknown operating frequency means very little. The technician records supply and return air temperatures at the head, line temperatures at the service valves, current draw at the outdoor unit, and the operating data the system itself reports through its service mode. Charge is verified by weight where the manufacturer specifies it, because superheat targets shift with compressor speed.
Multi-Zone Systems Add a Step
Where one outdoor unit serves several heads, a fault in one room can originate anywhere in the shared circuit. Branch controllers, individual expansion valves and the communication bus all become suspects. The visit checks each head in turn under a controlled call so that the failing branch is identified by behaviour, and a room that has always underperformed gets separated from one that changed recently.
Outside the Scope of a Service Visit
- Line set replacement or rerouting, which is installation work with its own access and sealing requirements.
- Relocating an indoor head to a different wall, along with the wall repair that follows.
- Electrical work upstream of the outdoor disconnect.
- Adding a zone to an existing multi-zone system, which depends on the outdoor unit capacity and belongs with ductless mini-split installation.
