What a First Installation Has to Create

Where no forced-air system exists, the project designs air distribution from nothing, and that becomes the largest part of the work. Houses heated by radiators or steam have no ducts, no plenum and no return path. Adding them means chases, soffits and sometimes the loss of a closet, and the routing survey happens before any equipment is discussed. In those buildings a mixed approach, ducted equipment for the main floors and ductless heads for rooms the ducts cannot reach, is frequently the practical answer.

The Risk Profile Differs

  • Assuming inherited services are adequate is the main replacement risk.
  • Designing a distribution route the building will not physically accept is the corresponding risk on a first installation.
  • Most replacement surprises appear during removal, when old work becomes visible for the first time.
  • Installation surprises appear during the survey, which is earlier and easier to price.
  • Schedule matters more on a replacement, since the house has neither heating nor cooling between removal and startup.

Planned Against Forced

A planned replacement can happen in a shoulder season with the old equipment still working, which allows unhurried selection and lets any prerequisite work be scheduled properly. A forced replacement, after a failed heat exchanger in January or a compressor failure in July, compresses the assessment into one visit. Both follow the same technical sequence, and only the amount of choice available differs.

Where Each Project Hands Off

Whole-system replacement and combined installation both run through whole-system HVAC installation. Where only cooling changes, the work belongs with central AC installation. Where only heating changes, it belongs with heating installation and replacement, and specifically furnace replacement when a furnace is being swapped for another furnace. Diagnosis of a system that has simply failed comes first through whole-system HVAC repair.

Existing Flues Are Inspected, Not Assumed

A masonry chimney that served an older appliance may be unlined, deteriorated or oversized for what remains. Inspection happens during assessment because the finding changes the project.

Structural Openings for New Equipment

Larger cabinets sometimes will not pass through the opening the outgoing unit came in by. Measuring the route and the doorways is part of the survey on any replacement.

Verification on Both Sides Before Handover

Charge and airflow on the cooling side, temperature rise and combustion on the heating side, static pressure common to both. A combined project is not finished until all of those are recorded.

Planning the Sequence With Other Trades

Electrical, gas fitting and any carpentry have to interleave with the HVAC crew across one or two days. Agreeing that order in advance is what keeps the house without heat for hours rather than days.

Assuming inherited services still suit the new equipment, particularly venting and gas line sizing. A furnace with a different input rating may need more gas than the existing pipe can deliver, and a condensing unit cannot use a masonry chimney.
