Uneven temperature between rooms has four common causes, and they are distinguished by pattern: which rooms, at what time of day, and in which season. Getting that pattern straight before anyone opens a duct saves a lot of unnecessary work.
Cause One: Stack Effect and Solar Gain
Warm air rises, and in summer the top floor of a Chicago two-storey also absorbs heat through the roof all afternoon. The result is upstairs bedrooms running several degrees above a downstairs thermostat by four in the afternoon and recovering after sunset. The signature is a pattern that follows the sun and reverses in winter, when the same upstairs rooms become the warm ones for the same reason.
Cause Two: Duct Faults
- Flexible branches crushed under storage or kinked at a bend, which cuts airflow to whatever they feed.
- Separation at a takeoff, delivering conditioned air into a floor cavity.
- Manual balancing dampers closed during a previous season and never reopened afterwards.
- Registers blocked by furniture or closed by an occupant, which changes the whole distribution.
- Return air never extended after a basement or attic was finished, leaving the added rooms with supply air and no path back to the equipment.
Cause Three: Distribution Designed for Heating
Older duct systems in this housing stock were built to deliver warm air, and warm air behaves differently from cold air. Supply runs sized for heating deliver less than a cooling coil needs, and registers placed low on walls for heating are in the wrong place for cooling. A house that heats evenly and cools unevenly is usually telling you about the design rather than about a fault.
Cause Four: Room Load the System Never Accounted For
A converted attic, a rear addition, a sun room or a west-facing room with large glazing can carry a load unlike anything else in the house. If the duct branch serving it was sized as though it were an ordinary bedroom, no amount of balancing will make it keep up on the worst afternoons.

What to Record Before Booking
Note the temperature in the affected rooms and at the thermostat at the same moment, at two or three times of day. Note whether the pattern changes between seasons. Note whether any of it started after building work. Those observations point the visit at the right cause, and they distinguish work for zone control systems from a duct repair found through central AC service or a room better handled with ductless equipment.
