Replacement is the project for a house that already has central cooling and has reached the point where continuing to repair the existing machine stops making sense. The distinguishing feature is inheritance: ducts, a line set, a condenser location, an electrical circuit and a condensate path all exist, and the work is deciding which of them still suit equipment built to today's standards.
The Point Where Repair Stops Being the Answer
No single number decides this. Several conditions push in the same direction: a compressor or coil failure on equipment past its expected service life, repeated failures across two or three seasons that share a root cause, a system still running R-22 where refrigerant supply is constrained, and capacity that no longer matches the house after an addition or a renovation. A diagnosis that names one failed component on an otherwise sound machine points the other way, back to central AC repair and maintenance.
What Gets Reassessed Rather Than Reused

Sizing Is Redone, Not Copied
The nameplate on the old unit records a sizing decision made for a different house, often before insulation, windows or an addition changed the load. A Manual J calculation for the building as it stands today is part of the project. Where the house has been tightened or the attic insulated since the original installation, the correct replacement is frequently smaller than what is being removed, and matching the old tonnage would repeat an error.
Refrigerant Changes What Can Carry Over
New equipment ships with R-454B, an A2L refrigerant, in place of R-410A. That affects which line sets and accessories can be reused, what leak detection the installation requires, and how the system is serviced afterwards. Systems still holding R-22 cannot be topped up as a long-term plan, and that constraint alone moves many older machines toward replacement.
What the Project Includes
- Site assessment with a load calculation for the current building, not the previous equipment.
- Equipment selection as an AHRI-matched indoor and outdoor pair.
- Recovery of the existing refrigerant under EPA 608 rules and removal of the old equipment.
- Line set replacement or documented flush and pressure test where the existing copper is retained.
- Coil installation, plenum sealing, condensate re-piping and electrical connections at the disconnect.
- Evacuation to a micron target, charge by the manufacturer method, and commissioning readings recorded on the paperwork.
- Permit handling and coordination of the municipal inspection.
Where a Different Project Fits Better
A house with no cooling at all is a first installation, and that path runs through central AC installation. Replacing the furnace at the same time makes it a whole-system HVAC project with one sizing pass for both seasons. Rooms with no ductwork are usually better served by ductless mini-split equipment, and comfort that varies floor to floor on an otherwise healthy system is a zone control question.
